‘Racist Pipe Bomb’ Found at Inglewood School Sparks Investigation

Authorities are investigating a report of a “racist pipe bomb” found at Bennett-Kew School in Inglewood.. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, was reported by Tammy Mosley, an African American resource specialist at the school. Mosley discovered the device behind her car in the staff parking lot around 8:30 a.m. and noticed a racial slur written on it. She took the device to her office, unaware of its nature.

Local civil rights activist Najee Ali, director of Project Islamic Hope, released a statement after speaking with Mosley. He described the incident as “a direct threat of racial terrorism against an African American educator and the entire school community” and called for a hate crime investigation by state leaders. Mosley expressed her shock and concern, emphasizing the threat to the safety of students and staff.

According to KTLA, the device appeared to be made of five cylinder-shaped objects taped together with the words “THE BIY N******” written on it. The school’s principal, Sarah Appleton, initially placed the device in her office instead of contacting law enforcement or initiating a lockdown. However, Inglewood Mayor James Butts confirmed that the object was not an explosive device and that law enforcement was eventually contacted.

The Inglewood Unified School District reported the incident to the Inglewood Police Department. The district stated its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the school community. As of now, authorities are investigating the matter, and no further comments have been provided by the police.
