DA Criticizes Judge in 2023 Jake Haro Case Over Baby’s Emmanuel’s Death

During a news conference on Wednesday, Riverside County District Attorney Michael Hestrin criticized a judge’s past decision in a 2023 child abuse case involving Jake Haro, linking it to the presumed death of Haro’s 7-month-old son, Emmanuel. Hestrin stated that they have a “strong indication” of where Emmanuel’s remains are located, though the body has not been recovered.

Authorities believe that Emmanuel was abused over time by his parents, Jake and Rebecca Haro, who have been charged with murder. The couple had previously claimed that Emmanuel was kidnapped, but officials now say this report was false.

Hestrin expressed outrage over a previous case where Jake Haro pleaded guilty to child abuse involving another infant but was not sentenced to prison. Instead, the judge gave Haro probation and 180 days of work-release. “If that judge had done his job as he should have done, Emmanuel would be alive today,” Hestrin said.

The Haros were arrested last week and appeared in court on Tuesday, where their bail was set at $1 million each. Their arraignment is scheduled to continue on September 4. Both parents are also charged with making a false police report.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the alleged abuse and the false kidnapping report. Emmanuel’s mother, Rebecca, is being held at the Robert Presley Detention Center, while Jake is at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility.
