A Republican-led congressional committee is expanding its investigation into alleged antisemitism at UCLA and UC San Francisco medical schools. The House Education and Workforce Committee, chaired by Rep. Tim Walberg, has requested years of internal documents from these institutions. The committee’s demands focus on reports of Jewish individuals experiencing hostility and fear on campus and whether the schools have adequately addressed these issues.
The investigation is part of a broader federal scrutiny of the University of California system. The Trump administration has already suspended over $500 million in research grants to UCLA due to alleged Title VI violations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, and national origin. The administration is seeking a $1 billion settlement and significant changes at UCLA before restoring the funds.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the committee’s letters demand all documents and communications related to antisemitic incidents since September 2021. They also request information about a report by a UCLA task force on anti-Palestinian, anti-Muslim, and anti-Arab racism. Rep. Walberg stated that the documents would help determine whether legislative changes are needed to address antisemitic discrimination.
UCLA has been under investigation by the Department of Health and Human Services for alleged discrimination in its admissions process. The Trump administration claims UCLA illegally uses race in admissions, contributing to the suspension of federal grants. Fox News reports that UCLA recently agreed to a $6 million settlement over its handling of anti-Israel protests.
UCLA’s medical school stated its commitment to combating antisemitism and protecting Jewish community members. UC San Francisco has yet to comment on the investigation. The University of California system is negotiating with the Justice Department to resolve these issues and restore funding.
