Lawsuit Filed Over Glamping Resort Near Joshua Tree

A proposed luxury glamping resort near Joshua Tree National Park has sparked a lawsuit from local residents and environmentalists. The Center for Biological Diversity and Indian Cove Neighbors have sued the city of Twentynine Palms, claiming the city failed to thoroughly evaluate the environmental impact of the Ofland Hotel project.

The 152-acre site, located half a mile from the national park, is intended to host 100 cabins, pools, and other amenities. Opponents argue that the development threatens wildlife habitats, including those of endangered species like the desert tortoise, and could disrupt a critical wildlife corridor. According to the Los Angeles Times, the lawsuit contends that the city did not conduct a full environmental impact report, instead opting for a mitigated negative declaration, which the plaintiffs argue is insufficient.

The city of Twentynine Palms approved the project in July, citing the need for jobs and revenue in an area with a 15.6% poverty rate. City Manager Stone James defended the project, stating it aligns with the community’s conservation-based identity. However, opponents argue that the development could lead to increased traffic, air pollution, and harm to local wildlife.

The lawsuit, filed in San Bernardino County Superior Court, seeks to have the city’s approval of the project rescinded. Meredith Stevenson, an attorney for the Center for Biological Diversity, emphasized the need for responsible development that respects the unique desert environment.
