The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of certain frozen shrimp products due to potential radioactive contamination. The shrimp, imported from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati in Indonesia, may be contaminated with Cesium-137 (Cs-137), a radioactive isotope. Although no contaminated products have entered U.S. commerce, the FDA is working with distributors and retailers to conduct a recall as a precautionary measure.
The recall affects frozen shrimp sold under various brands, including Great Value, at Walmart stores in several states such as Alabama, Florida, and Texas. According to the FDA, the shrimp was offered for sale between July 17 and August 8, 2025. The agency detected Cs-137 in a shipment that was detained before entering U.S. commerce. The detected level of Cs-137 was 68 Bq/kg, which is below the FDA’s Derived Intervention Level of 1200 Bq/kg. While this level does not pose an acute hazard, long-term exposure to low-level radiation can elevate cancer risk.

Southwind Foods, LLC, has initiated the recall and is advising consumers not to eat or serve the affected shrimp. The FDA has added PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati to a new import alert to prevent further imports until the contamination issue is resolved. The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
