SoCal School Uses Mindfulness to Aid Student Focus

Ánimo Compton Charter Leadership Academy in Compton is implementing mindfulness practices to help students focus and manage issues they face outside of school. This initiative is part of a broader effort by Green Dot Public Schools, which operates 18 schools across Los Angeles, to support students’ social and emotional growth following the pandemic.

The mindfulness program encourages students to engage in activities such as deep breathing exercises, helping them manage stress and improve their academic performance. Anton Blakely, an English teacher at Ánimo Compton, highlighted the challenges students face, including poverty and homelessness, which can distract them from their studies. “It’s a Tuesday, and you haven’t eaten since 6 o’clock on Sunday. How likely are you to be focused on multiplication tables?” Blakely said.

Students like Drayden Brooks and Diana Robles have noticed positive changes in their ability to focus and manage personal challenges. Robles shared, “Using the mindfulness strategies have helped me stay more focused. Continue to do my work and be more active in school.”

Green Dot Public Schools, committed to transforming public education, aims to ensure that all students graduate ready for college, leadership, and life. The school serves as a leadership and success incubator, providing personalized support and enrichment for students from middle to high school.
