California to Vote on New Redistricting Maps Amid Texas Changes

California’s Democratic Legislature is preparing to vote on a new redistricting plan on Thursday in response to Texas’ recent congressional map changes. The proposed plan aims to reduce five Republican-held House seats in California while strengthening Democratic incumbents in key battleground districts. This move is a direct reaction to Texas Republicans’ decision to redraw their congressional map, creating five new GOP-friendly seats for the 2026 elections.

The California plan seeks to increase the Democratic margin to 48 out of the state’s 52 congressional seats, up from the current 43. However, unlike Texas, the new districts in California will require voter approval, as the state typically uses an independent commission for redistricting. The proposal would bolster Democratic margins in competitive areas such as Orange County, San Diego County, and the Central Valley.

The redistricting efforts in both states highlight the significant role these maps play in determining political power. Texas’ changes followed directives from President Donald Trump, who encouraged Republican-controlled states to adjust district lines to favor the GOP, a practice known as partisan gerrymandering. In contrast, California’s plan, backed by former President Barack Obama, aims to counteract these efforts and maintain Democratic influence.

If approved, California’s new map will need to pass a special election in November. Meanwhile, Democrats are also considering legal challenges to Texas’ new maps, underscoring the ongoing battle over redistricting across the country.
