New Bridge to Aid Trout, Trails in San Juan Capistrano

A proposed bridge project in San Juan Capistrano aims to benefit both the local ecosystem and recreational trails. The $45 million initiative, led by the nonprofit California Trout, seeks to remove barriers in Trabuco Creek, facilitating the migration of endangered southern steelhead trout from the ocean to their spawning grounds in the Santa Ana Mountains. This effort is crucial for the preservation of these trout, which face numerous challenges in their natural habitat.

In addition to aiding the trout, the project plans to enhance the surrounding environment by removing non-native plant species and stabilizing the creek’s banks. These measures will not only improve the habitat for wildlife but also ensure public safety along the trails. The bridge will serve as a key component in connecting various trails, enhancing the recreational opportunities for residents and visitors in the area.

California Trout’s mission is to protect and restore wild trout, salmon, and their ecosystems throughout the state. This project exemplifies their commitment to preserving California’s natural heritage while promoting sustainable recreation.
