Bodies of Deputies Killed in Explosion Moved in Solemn Procession

LOS ANGELES (CNS)  – The bodies of the three Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies killed in last week’s explosion at the Biscailuz Regional Training Center in East Los Angeles were removed from a medical examiner’s facility Friday in a somber procession of officers and law enforcement vehicles.

The flag-draped coffins of sheriff’s detectives Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Victor Lemus and William Osborn, all of whom worked for the department’s Arson Explosives Detail, were placed into awaiting hearses as another flag flew atop an extended fire department ladder.

The trio of bomb squad deputies had more than 70 years of combined experience with the sheriff’s department.

They were killed in the blast about 7:25 a.m. last Friday at the training center in the 1000 block of North Eastern Avenue, southwest of the interchange of the San Bernardino (10) and Long Beach (710) freeways, according to the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the sheriff’s department and LAPD have conducted a series of searches from Santa Monica to Marina del Rey as they work to determine the cause of the blast, which may have involved ordnance collected from a storage compartment at a Santa Monica apartment building.

No arrests have been announced.

Funeral services for the fallen deputies are pending.
