Encino residents are taking action to protect their neighborhood as a wave of crime, including burglaries and a double murder, has shaken the community. The recent killing of “American Idol” executive Robin Kaye and her husband Thomas Deluca has heightened concerns. On Monday night, just hours after a community meeting with law enforcement, two more homes were targeted by attempted burglars, including one belonging to former “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Teddi Mellencamp.
According to NBC Los Angeles, the LAPD responded to a burglary call at Mellencamp’s home on Hayvenhurst Drive. Mellencamp and her husband, Edwin Arroyave, were home with their children when intruders attempted to break in. Arroyave said, “Three individuals basically jumped the gate and, luckily, the cameras detected people jumping. So, we knew, right away.” The intruders fled when the alarm went off, and no one was harmed.
Another attempted burglary occurred on Enfield Avenue, where homeowners witnessed the break-in through security cameras and called 911. By the time police arrived, the burglars had left, and it was unclear if anything was taken.
The community meeting, attended by over 200 residents, was held to address the recent crime wave. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman and LAPD officials, including Deputy Chief Marla Ciuffetelli, were present to discuss safety measures. Hochman revealed that the suspect in the Kaye-Deluca murders, Raymond Boodarian, used the couple’s own gun and called the police himself after the incident.
In response to the crime wave, the LAPD has increased patrols in the area, especially between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., and is conducting helicopter flyovers to enhance security. They are also expanding their citizen patrol program, encouraging more community members to volunteer.
Encino residents remain on edge, with some expressing fear despite investing in security systems. As ABC7 reported, one resident said, “The crime is out of control. You don’t even feel safe going to sleep in your own home.”
