Former L.A. Sheriff Villanueva Eyes 2026 Comeback

Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva has registered a campaign committee, “Villanueva for Sheriff 2026,” with the California Secretary of State’s office, signaling a possible bid to reclaim his former position in the upcoming election. Although Villanueva has not officially announced his candidacy, the filing suggests he is preparing to raise funds for the 2025-2026 election cycle.

Villanueva, who lost the sheriff’s race to Robert Luna in 2022, has maintained a public presence through social media and media appearances, often discussing issues related to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and local politics. Luna, who has announced plans to seek reelection, has highlighted his achievements in reducing crime and increasing transparency during his tenure.

Villanueva’s previous term was marked by controversy, including clashes with the Democrat-dominated Board of Supervisors and criticism for not addressing alleged deputy gangs. In his 2022 concession speech, Villanueva criticized his detractors for spreading “false narratives” about his leadership.

According to ABC7, Villanueva plans to announce “exciting news” soon, which may clarify his intentions regarding the 2026 race. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times reports that Villanueva has not yet responded to questions about his candidacy.

Another potential challenger, Lt. Oscar Martinez, has already declared his intention to run against Luna, citing a need for leadership that empowers deputies. Villanueva’s potential entry into the race would add a significant name to the contest, setting the stage for a competitive election.
