Public Asked to Help Find Missing Assault Rifle in L.A.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the disappearance of a Colt M4 assault rifle, which may have fallen out of a squad car in South Los Angeles. Deputies noticed the rifle was missing from the trunk of their vehicle on Saturday night between 10:30 and 11:00 p.m. The weapon was stored in a black, hard-shelled case along with five magazines, each loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.

According to a statement from the Sheriff’s Department, deputies traveled a route that included Normandie Avenue, Imperial Highway, Hawthorne Boulevard, and 104th Street to Inglewood Avenue. The department is asking the public for assistance in locating the missing rifle and has identified this route in hopes of recovering the weapon.

The Los Angeles Times reported that upon realizing the rifle was missing, personnel from the South Los Angeles Station immediately searched the station parking lot and retraced the deputies’ route. Surveillance footage from the area is being reviewed, and local law enforcement agencies have been notified.

The department is also conducting an internal investigation to determine if proper procedures were followed. Anyone with information or video footage from the deputies’ route is urged to contact the Sheriff’s South L.A. station at (323) 820-6700.
