Attorneys allege that Dr. William Moore Thompson IV, a former infectious-disease expert at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, treated the facility like a “sexual playground.” More than 160 individuals have filed 21 civil lawsuits against Dr. Thompson, accusing him of sexually abusing patients under the guise of medical checkups.
Dr. Thompson, 57, was known for his work with men living with HIV and AIDS. However, allegations surfaced in 2023, leading to his arrest and the suspension of his medical license. According to Lawsuit Information Center, the lawsuits claim that Dr. Thompson performed unnecessary and aggressive exams for his own sexual gratification.
The lawsuits also target Hoag Hospital, asserting that the hospital either knew or should have known about Dr. Thompson’s misconduct. The Orange County Register reports that the lawsuits allege Dr. Thompson engaged in inappropriate conduct with both patients and hospital staff. Hoag Hospital has stated that Dr. Thompson was a private doctor with clinical privileges, which were suspended after his arrest.
In April 2025, Mary Alexander & Associates filed a lawsuit on behalf of a man alleging sexual assault by Dr. Thompson. The case is part of a broader legal effort to hold both Dr. Thompson and Hoag Hospital accountable. A jury trial has yet to be scheduled for either the civil or criminal cases against Dr. Thompson.
