Big Bear’s famous bald eagles, Jackie and Shadow, returned home Saturday night after being startled by a Fourth of July fireworks show. The eagles, known for their internet fame through a live webcam, flew back to their favorite spot, the Twin Pine tree, after a day of absence.
According to Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV), the first sign of their return was a flyby by one of the eagles around 5:30 p.m. Later, Shadow landed in the Twin Pine tree, followed by Jackie, who greeted Shadow with a vocal call. The fireworks show, which began at 9 p.m. on Friday, had caused the eagles to flee, as noted by FOBBV’s executive director Sandy Steers in a statement.
The fireworks show proceeded despite objections from environmental groups concerned about the impact on the eagles and their eaglets, Sunny and Gizmo. Steers expressed concern that the loud noises could frighten the young eagles, who recently learned to fly. She noted that eagles have poor night vision, making nighttime flight dangerous.
The eagles’ return was celebrated by nature enthusiasts and FOBBV, who had feared they might stay away longer. In previous years, Jackie and Shadow have been absent for up to six days after fireworks. Jenny Voisard, media manager for FOBBV, expressed relief at their quick return, noting that the fledglings might still be nearby.
The fireworks show, organized by Visit Big Bear, was held with confidence that it would not harm the eagles’ habitat, as stated on their Facebook page. However, the event has reignited discussions about the impact of such celebrations on local wildlife.
