A brush fire, known as the Rancho Fire, broke out in Laguna Beach on Monday, prompting evacuation orders for residents in several areas. The fire, which started around 2:15 p.m., is burning near homes on La Mirada Street, Katella Street, Summit Drive, and Baja Street. An evacuation warning has been issued for the Arch Beach Heights neighborhood.
As reported by KTLA, the fire was initially estimated to be three acres in size. Firefighters, aided by helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, are actively battling the blaze with water and flame retardant. Ground crews are also working to protect homes in the affluent coastal community with water hoses.
According to FOX LA, the fire is located near Rancho Laguna Road and Morningside Drive, and flames are reportedly moving uphill. Authorities have established an evacuation center at the Laguna Beach Community and Susi Q Center, located at 380 Third Street.
Authorities closed Broadway and South Coasts Highway and Crown Valley Parkway and Coast Highway, diverting southbound traffic to Laguna Canyon Road.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and as of 3:45 p.m., fire crews appeared to be gaining control of the blaze, with the immediate risk to property waning.
