Liverpool FC Star Diogo Jota Dead At 28

Liverpool FC and former Portugal forward Diogo Jota has died at the age of 28 following a car accident that also killed his brother, RB Leipzig striker and former Portugal teammate André Silva, in Spain, police said Thursday (July 3) via ESPN.

Liverpool FC, Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro and the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) also confirmed the fatal crash. Jota and Silva were reportedly found dead after their Lamborghini went off a road onto an isolated stretch of highway, which resulted in the vehicle being engulfed in flames, the Spanish Civil Guard confirmed to the Associated Press.

Firefighters responded to the scene as the fire from the vehicle spread to nearby vegetation, according to authorities. The cause of the crash, which took place around midnight local time, is under investigation and the two bodies were undergoing forensic analysis.

Jota and Silva were the only two people in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The Liverpool star’s death came 10 days after he married Rute Cardoso, whom he shares three children with including their youngest born last year.

Jota, whose full name is Diogo José Teixeira de Silva, made 182 appearances for Liverpool FC since transferring to the club from Wolves in 2020, which included a Premier League title in May, as well as an FA Cup and two Caraboa Cups during his tenure.
