Trump Teases Tariff Deadline Decision, Mystery TikTok Buyer

President Donald Trump appeared to tease that he doesn’t plan to extend the July deadline for other countries to reach deals with the United States before his “Liberation Day” tariffs go in to place, while also teasing a potential TikTok buyer ahead of its upcoming deadline for a sale.

Trump had previously implemented a 90-day extension on his tariffs in April and has reached agreements with a few nations, including the United Kingdom, and said last week that he would be flexible on the deadline with the rest, but appeared to change course during a pre-taped interview for FOX NewsSunday Morning Features.

“It’s so simple, we’re sending letters out. I’d rather do it now. We made deals. But I’d just rather send them a letter — a very fair letter — saying, ‘Congratulations, we’re going to allow you to trade in the United States of America,” Trump said. ” ‘You’re going to pay a 25 percent tariff or 20 percent or 40 or 50 percent.’ I would rather do that.”

Trump set a deadline for July 8 and July 9 for Europe, specifically, to reach a deal with the U.S. before facing 50% tariffs.

“I don’t think I’ll need to because I could, no big deal,” Trump said when asked by FOX News about whether he’d extend the July deadline for a tariff deal.

The president then compared the tariff extension to the 90-day extension on the demand that the TikTok’s Chinese-owned parent company ByteDance sell the social media platform, claiming “we have a buyer.”

“It’s like TikTok. I’m extending that, you know, but no big, we have a buyer for TikTok, by the way,” Trump said, claiming the group of buyers was comprised of “very wealthy investors” looking to buy the U.S. version of the app. “I think I will need probably China approval, and I think President Xi will probably do it. Who’s the buyer? I’ll tell you in about two weeks.”
