National Guard troops in Los Angeles have temporarily detained civilians during recent protests over immigration raids, according to Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman. The detained individuals were quickly handed over to law enforcement. Maj. Gen. Sherman, commander of Task Force 51, oversees more than 4,000 Guard troops and 700 Marines deployed to maintain security during the protests.
The National Guard’s involvement has been limited to detaining individuals until police can take control, and they do not participate in arrests or other law enforcement activities. The troops are undergoing several days of training on civil unrest, with additional legal training for those involved in security during immigration operations.
Despite a recent calm in Los Angeles, Sherman warned of potential escalation, noting that discussions about protests are occurring nationwide. “We are expecting a ramp up,” he said, emphasizing the focus on maintaining order in Los Angeles.
The deployment comes amid ongoing protests against President Donald Trump‘s immigration policies. More than 20 people were detained for curfew violations during the initial nights of demonstrations, and police used crowd-control projectiles to disperse protesters.
