California Governor Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris visited Compton on Thursday to engage with local students and support educational initiatives. Both prominent Democrats remain silent about their future political plans, but their presence in Compton highlighted their ongoing political engagement.
At Compton High School, Harris made a surprise appearance during the graduation ceremony. Invited by graduating senior MyShay Causey, who is set to attend Cornell University, Harris mingled with students, taking selfies and offering encouragement. Although she did not address the crowd, her presence was warmly received. Causey expressed admiration for Harris, saying, “As a black woman myself, I look up to the way she’s portrayed herself” according to Yahoo News.
Harris, who lost to President Trump in the 2024 presidential election, is considering a gubernatorial run to replace Governor Newsom, who is term-limited. She is expected to make a decision by the end of the summer.
Governor Newsom also visited a local school, although details of his visit were not as widely reported. Both politicians are maintaining a public presence as they weigh their next steps in their political careers.
