The FBI and Port Authority Police arrested a man at JFK Airport in Queens overnight in connection with last month’s bombing of a fertility clinic in Palm Springs. The individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken into custody on a federal arrest warrant from California. He is expected to make his initial court appearance this afternoon in Brooklyn federal court, according to two people familiar with the matter.
The bombing, which occurred at the American Reproductive Centers clinic, resulted in one death and four injuries. The FBI identified 25-year-old Guy Edward Bartkus as the primary suspect, who died in the blast. According to the Washington Post, Bartkus allegedly held extremist views against procreation and attempted to livestream the attack. The explosion was described as one of the largest bombings in Southern California history, causing significant damage to the clinic and surrounding area.
Palm Springs Police Chief Andrew Mills emphasized the city’s commitment to inclusivity and safety, noting that the clinic specifically serves the LGBTQ community. He commended the swift actions of the Palm Springs Fire Department for saving all embryos stored at the clinic. Mayor Pro Tem Naomi Soto stated, “We stand united against violence, against hate. Palm Springs is a city of love, acceptance, joy, and hope.”
Investigators are now examining whether the arrested individual provided material support for the bomb.
