Concerned teachers and community members in Southern California are rallying to support Martir Garcia Lara, a fourth grader at Torrance Elementary School, who was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during an immigration hearing in Houston, Texas, on May 29. Martir attended the hearing with his father, expecting an update on his father’s immigration status. Instead, both were detained and separated by ICE.
PTA President Jasmin King expressed concern, stating, “He’s alone and he’s not able to return home.” The school community, including teachers and PTA members, is actively seeking ways to reunite Martir with his father and bring them back to Southern California. According to FOX 5 San Diego, they have reached out to federal, state, and local leaders for assistance and are prepared to offer legal aid or financial support if needed.
The situation has left the community worried about Martir’s well-being, as he remains separated from his family in an unfamiliar environment. King emphasized the urgency of the matter, noting that they have not received any information on why the detentions occurred. The school and community continue to advocate for the boy’s release and safe return home.
