UC Riverside Offers Tuition, Stipends to Boost Teacher Numbers

UC Riverside, in partnership with the San Bernardino City Unified School District, has launched a new residency program to address the critical shortage of teachers. The program, which began recruiting this spring, offers full tuition coverage, living stipends, and guaranteed job placement for aspiring teachers who already hold a bachelor’s degree. Participants will receive approximately $32,000 in financial support, including a living stipend and funds for mentor teachers.

The one-year credentialing program emphasizes intensive mentoring and hands-on classroom experience. Residents will work alongside veteran teachers throughout an entire academic year, participating in professional development and other key aspects of teaching life. In return, they commit to teaching in the San Bernardino district after completing the program.

Frances Valdovinos, assistant dean and director of teacher education at UC Riverside, highlighted the program’s focus on critical areas like special education, dual-language instruction, math, and science. “This partnership gives future teachers an unprecedented level of support while helping San Bernardino schools meet urgent staffing needs,” she said, as reported by UCR News.

The district expects around 190 teacher retirements and resignations this year, making this initiative crucial. Robert Morales, director of human resources for the district, called the residency a “game-changer” for creating a pipeline of dedicated teachers who understand and serve the community.

The program aims to recruit up to 35 participants for its first cohort starting in Summer 2025, with another cohort to follow in 2026. Preference is given to candidates with ties to the San Bernardino area, reflecting the community’s demographics and supporting diversity in the educator workforce.

For more information about the residency program or to apply, prospective candidates should contact UCR’s School of Education or visit its website.
