Man Arrested For Breaking Into Sheriff’s Vehicles Moments After Release

A homeless man in San Bernardino was rearrested shortly after being released from jail for attempting to break into vehicles in the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department parking lot. Manuel Nunez-Palomino, a 36-year-old transient, was initially arrested on May 8 for an outstanding misdemeanor traffic warrant and booked into the Central Detention Center. He was released the next day, May 9, at 12:18 p.m.

As he left the facility, security cameras caught Nunez-Palomino trying to open several vehicle doors in the employee parking lot. According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, a deputy observed him open the unlocked passenger door of a vehicle with an occupant inside. The driver, who did not know Nunez-Palomino, feared a robbery and yelled at him to exit the vehicle.

Deputy R. Cupid approached and ordered Nunez-Palomino to stop, but he fled on foot. After a brief chase, he was detained and charged with attempted vehicle burglary. The Sheriff’s Department urges anyone with information about the incident to contact the Central Detention Center at 909-386-0910.
