AT&T Customers’ Call And Text Records Stolen In Major Data Breach

AT&T was the victim of a massive data breach in which hackers stole almost all its customers’ cell phone and text message records. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the telecom company said that an illegal download on a third-party cloud platform allowed the hackers to access and download the call logs from May 1, 2022, through October 31, 2022, and January 2, 2023.

The logs contained records of every phone number customers called and sent text messages to, even customers who do not have AT&T. However, the logs do not include the content of the text messages or phone calls.

“While the data does not include customer names, there are often ways, using publicly available online tools, to find the name associated with a specific telephone number,” the company said in the filing.

The telecom company said that the stolen logs do not appear to be publicly available.

AT&T has been assisting the Department of Justice with the investigation into the hack and said that at least one person has been apprehended.
