A tragic plane crash occurred in Simi Valley, California, on Saturday, claiming the lives of two individuals and a dog aboard the aircraft. The small, single-engine plane crashed into two homes in the Wood Ranch community, igniting a fire that damaged both residences. Fortunately, no one on the ground was injured.
The crash happened around 1:51 p.m. in the 200 block of High Meadow Street. About 40 firefighters responded to the scene, quickly extinguishing the second-alarm fire. Homeowner Arman Hovakemian described how he and his wife narrowly escaped their home after noticing the plane flying low and spiraling toward the ground. “I came in to the patio door to warn her, and then I heard the bang,” he said, adding that he tried to extinguish the fire with a hose before retreating due to the smell of gas.
The aircraft, identified as a Vans RV-10, departed from William J. Fox Airfield in Lancaster and was en route to Camarillo Airport. According to ABC7, the plane appeared to be a homemade kit plane, with only a lone tire visible among the debris. The Ventura County Star reported that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation into the cause of the crash.
As the investigation continues, the affected homes have been red-taped, preventing residents from returning. The Simi Valley Police Department has advised the public to avoid the area.
