Five-Year-Old Boy Dies After Being Left In Hot Car For Hours

A five-year-old boy died after being left in a hot car as temperatures soared into the upper 80s in Omaha, Nebraska. The Omaha Police Department said they received a call just after 5 p.m. on Wednesday (July 10) about an unresponsive child. When officers arrived, they found the boy inside of a car and rushed him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The temperature topped out at 86 degrees on Wednesday, and it was around 82 degrees when officers arrived at the scene. The heat index was 88. While the temperature inside the car was unknown, it would take about ten minutes to reach 100 degrees.

The police said the boy was in the car for “an extended period of time.”

Authorities arrested the boy’s foster mother, 40-year-old Juanita Pinon, and charged her with child abuse by neglect, resulting in death.

According to KETV, Pinon was in a beauty salon at the time, and the police spent several hours interviewing witnesses at the salon.

When asked by officers, Pinon refused to answer if she accidentally left the boy in the car or if it was intentional.
