Police Disperse Pro-Palestinian Protest at UCLA Campus

On Wednesday, police in riot gear intervened to disperse a pro-Palestinian protest on the UCLA campus. The protest, organized by Students for Justice in Palestine at UCLA, marked the anniversary of a previous confrontation between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel groups. Approximately 200 protesters gathered at Wilson Plaza to watch a film about past protests before marching to various campus locations, including Bruin Plaza and De Neve Plaza.

According to the Daily Bruin, the University of California Police Department detained two protesters during the demonstrations. The protestors blocked traffic and marched to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, chanting slogans like “Free Palestine.” Officers used less-than-lethal weapons and motorcycles to disperse the crowd.

The protest followed a violent incident a year ago when pro-Israel counter-protesters attacked a Palestinian solidarity encampment. The protestors were initially set to gather at Dickson Plaza, but university police closed the area after arresting a non-UCLA-affiliated protester earlier in the day.

Deadline reported that UCLA officials announced limited campus operations for the following days, shifting in-person classes to remote learning. The protest is part of ongoing tensions and demonstrations across university campuses in Los Angeles, highlighting the complex and contentious nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
