LA Metro will begin screening passengers for concealed weapons at the C-Line’s Norwalk station starting Monday. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to enhance safety on the Metro system. The effectiveness of the new technology will be assessed over the next year at key stations to determine its viability as a safety tool.
In response to increased violence on Metro buses and trains, LA Metro has implemented various safety measures. These include environmental improvements, modern fare gates, increased uniformed presence, and care-based strategies. The weapons detection screening is the latest addition to these efforts.
The screening process will commence at 10:30 a.m. at 12901 Hoxie Ave. Metro Board Chair Janice Hahn, Metro Board First Vice Chair Fernando Dutra, and Robert Gummer, deputy chief of safety, security, and law enforcement for LA Metro, will be present to observe the procedure. NBC Los Angeles reports that the initiative aims to provide a safer environment for both passengers and employees.
The assessment of the technology’s effectiveness will help determine if it can be a viable tool for enhancing safety across the Metro system. Fox LA notes that this is part of a broader strategy to protect the community and ensure a secure transit experience.
