The LA28 organizing committee is in discussions with Huntington Beach to host the beach volleyball events for the 2028 Summer Olympics. This development comes after LA28 ended negotiations with Santa Monica due to disagreements over community benefits, operational details, and financial guarantees.
Santa Monica had been a frontrunner to host the event, given its historical ties to beach volleyball. However, a financial analysis revealed that hosting the event would result in a $1.45 million loss for the city. Despite the setback, Santa Monica remains committed to participating in the Olympics through other avenues, such as hosting hospitality houses and watch parties, as reported by the Santa Monica Daily Press.
Huntington Beach, along with Long Beach, is now being considered as an alternative venue. Officials from Huntington Beach and Visit Huntington Beach have confirmed discussions with LA28 but have not provided specific details. The Los Angeles Times noted that LA28 plans to present an updated venue proposal to the International Olympic Committee soon.
The decision to move away from Santa Monica was partly due to the city’s insistence on transparent negotiations and financial assurances. According to Torched, Santa Monica’s stance on requiring clear benefits and minimizing risks was a significant factor in the breakdown of talks.
The 2028 Olympic Games will begin on July 14, 2028, in Los Angeles, with various sports hosted across different cities in Southern California.
