Three Months After Eaton Fire, Survivors Struggling with Housing, Supplies

Three months after the devastating Eaton Fire in Altadena, California, survivors are still grappling with significant challenges, particularly in housing and essential supplies. Cleanup efforts are underway, but many victims, especially low-income residents, face ongoing struggles. Bridgette Bradley, a single mother, lost her Section 8 home in the fire and is now unable to receive necessary medical supplies for her disabled child due to the lack of a permanent address. Bradley’s son, Nehemiah, relies on a feeding tube and colostomy bag, but delivery of these essential supplies has been hindered because she is currently living in a hotel.

According to Yahoo News, nonprofits like Neighborhood Survants are stepping in to provide support, offering items like donated mattresses. However, many survivors, including Bradley, are still living in vehicles due to the difficulty in obtaining hotel vouchers. Michelle White from Neighborhood Survants highlighted the challenges low-income residents face, noting that many are underinsured or uninsured.

In another case, the Sawyer family returned to find their home destroyed by the fire. Lydia Sawyer expressed her heartbreak, saying, “This was my grandchildren’s home, everybody’s home basically.” The family, who shared the home with their grandchildren, was informed by their insurance company that their home would not be covered due to a missed payment, as reported by 25 News Now.

Both families have turned to crowdfunding to help rebuild their lives. As the community rallies around these survivors, the road to recovery remains long and challenging, with many still in need of assistance from agencies and organizations.
