Pasadena Residents Alarmed by Aggressive Coyote Incidents

Residents of a Pasadena neighborhood are expressing concern after a series of aggressive coyote encounters. The incidents have been reported near Euclid Avenue and California Boulevard, where coyotes have been clashing with residents and their pets.

Mike Kwan, a local resident, described a frightening encounter when a coyote pursued him and his dog late at night. “It was like 10:30 p.m. and I saw a coyote on the other side of the street,” Kwan told KTLA’s Mary Beth McDade. “I just panicked and I turned and ran as fast as I could, but I couldn’t get rid of the coyote. It was following us.” Fortunately, a passing motorist offered Kwan refuge in their car.

Other residents have reported similar aggressive behavior from the coyotes. On Thursday morning, a coyote targeted a woman and her dog, prompting bystanders to intervene with sticks to chase it away. Cindy McNichols, a witness, noted, “These coyotes are extremely aggressive. The one that my sister saw today was snarling his teeth, going towards that woman.”

Rebecca Dmytryk, director of Humane Wildlife Control, believes that a male and female coyote have been residing in the area for years. She explained that the male coyote has become “human-conditioned,” likely due to being fed by people. “Somebody has hand-fed that coyote and that’s really problematic,” Dmytryk said. She emphasized the importance of not feeding wild animals and suggested using sticks or loud noises to scare them away.

According to KTLA, Pasadena city officials have been working with Dmytryk to develop a response plan for the coyote situation. The Pasadena Municipal Code prohibits feeding non-domesticated predators, and violators can face citations or fines. The Pasadena Humane Society advises residents to remove potential food sources like outdoor pet food and unsecured garbage.

For more information on coyote safety, residents can contact the City Service Center or visit the Pasadena Humane Society’s website.
