China announced its plans to impose a 34% tariff on imports of all U.S. goods beginning on April 10 in retaliation to U.S. President Donald Trump‘s ‘Liberation Day’ double-digit tariffs on it and other countries, the New York Post reported on Friday (April 4).
The 34% tariff on U.S. goods announced by the Commerce Ministry in Beijing matched the same percentage Trump ordered on Chinese exports on Wednesday (April 3). China also plans to impose more export controls on rare earths, which are materials used in high-tech products, including samarium and its compounds used in aerospace manufacturing and the defense sector, as well as gadolinium, which is used in MRI scans.
China’s customs administration also confirmed that it suspended imports of chicken from the U.S. suppliers Mountaire Farms and Coastal Processing, claiming it had repeatedly detected furazolidone, a drug banned in the country, in shipments from the two American companies in the past. A total of 27 firms were added to lists of companies subject to trade sanctions or export controls by the Chinese government since the tariffs were implemented.
On Wednesday, Trump announced that the U.S. would impose trade barriers on American exports as part of sweeping “reciprocal” tariffs on other countries, which he dubbed “Liberation Day.”
“For decades, our country has been looted, pillaged, raped and plundered by nations near and far. … Foreign leaders have stolen our jobs, foreign cheaters have ransacked our factories and foreign scavengers have torn apart our once beautiful American dream,” Trump said via Yahoo! News.
“But it is not going to happen anymore,” he continued. “Reciprocal — that means they do it to us, and we do it to them. Very simple. Can’t get any simpler than that.”
