Southwest Airlines Ends Free Checked Bags Policy

Southwest Airlines announced on Tuesday that it will end its long-standing policy of allowing passengers to check bags for free. Starting with bookings made on or after May 28, most passengers will need to pay for checked luggage. However, the airline will still offer two free checked bags to Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and passengers flying on Business Select fares. A-List Members will receive one free checked bag, as will Rapid Rewards Credit Card holders.

Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan stated that the decision is part of a broader strategy to boost revenue and return to profitability. The airline has faced financial challenges recently and is under pressure from investors to improve its financial performance. The move to charge for checked bags aligns Southwest with other major U.S. airlines, which have long charged such fees.

In addition to the baggage policy change, Southwest plans to introduce a new basic fare for its lowest-priced tickets. The airline also announced plans to offer assigned seating and premium seating options with extra legroom in the future.

The changes mark a significant shift for the Texas-based carrier, which has used its free checked bags policy as a key differentiator in the budget airline market. Despite the changes, Southwest aims to attract new customer segments and meet evolving customer needs.

The airline’s website has not yet updated the fee schedule, but the price for a third checked bag is expected to be around $150, with overweight bags costing between $150 and $200. The new policy is part of Southwest’s efforts to adapt to market demands and remain competitive in the airline industry.
