The search for Sudiksha Konanki, a University of Pittsburgh student, continues after she disappeared during a spring break trip to the Dominican Republic. The 20-year-old was last seen early Thursday morning (March 6) entering the beach area of the RIU Republica Resort in Punta Cana. Konanki and her five friends arrived at the resort on March 3.
According to the Dominican Republic National Police, an extensive search operation involving drones, helicopters, divers, and canine units is underway. Her friends returned to the hotel without her, and authorities are reviewing security footage and cellphone data for clues.
While local authorities suspect a possible drowning, Konanki’s family fears she may have been kidnapped. Her father, Subbarayudu Konanki, expressed concerns, stating, “She’s not found, so we’re asking them to investigate multiple options, like kidnapping or abduction.” The family has filed a complaint urging authorities to explore all possibilities, including foul play.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia, where Konanki’s family resides, is coordinating with Dominican authorities, the U.S. State Department, and the Indian Embassy. Konanki is also an Indian national.
The University of Pittsburgh is in contact with her family and offering support. The search continues as authorities work to uncover the circumstances surrounding Konanki’s disappearance.
