Actor Steve Carell has teamed up with the charity Alice’s Kids to cover prom ticket costs for high school seniors in Southern California affected by recent wildfires. In a video message shown at six high schools in Altadena, California, Carell announced that the charity would pay for the prom tickets of students impacted by the devastating wildfires earlier this year. “If you have already paid for your prom tickets, they will reimburse you,” Carell said in the video.
The wildfires, which ravaged areas like the Pacific Palisades and Altadena, destroyed over 16,000 structures and claimed at least 29 lives. School campuses were also damaged, leaving many students and parents struggling to find alternative schooling options. Alice’s Kids has committed approximately $175,000 to ensure more than 800 students can attend prom, with tickets typically costing between $100 and $150 each.
Ron Fitzsimmons, executive director of Alice’s Kids, expressed the organization’s intent to provide relief and joy to students who have faced a challenging year. “Going to prom should be a celebration,” he said, hoping the gesture would allow students to unwind and enjoy their special night. The announcement was met with cheers and applause from students at schools like John Muir High School and Aveson Charter School, which suffered significant damage from the fires.
In addition to this initiative, Carell participated in the “Skate for LA Strong” hockey tournament to raise funds for fire relief efforts. He concluded his message with, “Have fun, enjoy the prom. And remember, this is Steve Carell.”
