Afghan Terror Suspect Charged And Extradited To The US

A suspect in the deadly Abbey Gate bombing during the Afghanistan withdrawal has been charged and extradited to the United States. Mohammad Sharifullah, also known as Jafar, was taken into custody over the weekend and faces charges of providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization, resulting in death. He is expected to appear in federal court in Virginia on Wednesday (March 5).

The Abbey Gate bombing occurred on August 26, 2021, at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport, killing 13 U.S. service members and approximately 170 Afghan civilians. The attack was carried out by Abdul Rahman al-Logari, an Islamic State-Khorasan (ISIS-K) member. During an FBI interrogation, Sharifullah admitted to scouting a route for the bomber and communicating with other ISIS-K members to ensure the path was clear.

Sharifullah was captured in Pakistan’s Balochistan province after a joint intelligence operation between the U.S. and Pakistan. President Donald Trump announced the arrest during an address to Congress, emphasizing the U.S. commitment to bringing terrorists to justice. Attorney General Pamela Bondi stated that under President Trump’s leadership, the Department of Justice will ensure terrorists like Sharifullah have no safe haven.

Sharifullah’s charges stem from his involvement with ISIS-K, which claimed responsibility for the attack. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of life in prison. The U.S. Department of Justice, FBI, and CIA were instrumental in securing his apprehension and extradition to the U.S., according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
