94 Dogs Euthanized in Animal Cruelty Case; Suspect May Receive Probation

One of California’s worst animal cruelty cases has resulted in the deaths of 94 dogs, with animal advocates now concerned the suspect may avoid jail time through a potential plea agreement.

In 2024, authorities seized 114 dogs from Woofy Acres Adoptions in Pinon Hills, San Bernardino County. According to investigators, 94 of those animals were in such poor condition they had to be euthanized.

“This was the worst case I’ve ever seen,” said Shira Scott Astrof, founder of the Animal Rescue Mission, who told FOX LA the animals were found “skin and bones, just barely alive.”

Dianne Denise Bedford, the founder of Woofy Acres Adoptions and a registered nurse, faces 37 criminal counts, including seven felony charges of animal cruelty. She posted $250,000 bail following her arrest.

Animal advocates are now raising concerns that Bedford might receive only probation under a possible plea deal. According to rescuers, prosecutors have indicated they may pursue just one felony animal cruelty charge, which under California law could result in probation rather than incarceration.

“She went to shelters pretending to rescue these dogs, collected money and didn’t provide care,” Scott Astrof said. “This was not accidental.”

Legal experts suggest the case could extend beyond animal cruelty. Former prosecutor Mary David noted that Bedford could face additional scrutiny, including possible fraud or tax violations related to her nonprofit’s operations.

According to Beezy’s Rescue, a local animal welfare organization tracking the case, the conditions documented at Woofy Acres showed severe cruelty, including dogs found “emaciated, malnourished, and dehydrated” with “chronic stress, untreated medical issues, embedded collars, and sores.”

Animal welfare advocates are urging the public to contact the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office to demand accountability in the case. A court hearing is scheduled for February 17 at the Rancho Cucamonga courthouse.
