A shooting at a large rental home in Bath Township, Ohio, injured nine people early Sunday (November 2). The house was rented through Airbnb for a birthday party promoted on social media, drawing a large crowd of teenagers. The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m., about 15 miles northwest of Akron. Police Chief Vito Sinopoli stated that the severity of the injuries is unclear, and it is not confirmed if all nine victims were shot, as one person may have been injured by a fall.
The party was held at a rental property, which violates local zoning ordinances, and most attendees were under 18. The motive for the shooting remains unknown, and no arrests have been made. Sinopoli noted that social media posts about the party contributed to the large turnout.
Airbnb has suspended the property listing and removed the account of the person who rented the home. The company emphasized its policy against unauthorized gatherings and expressed heartbreak over the violence. Airbnb stated that it is cooperating with the ongoing police investigation.
This shooting marks the second incident at an Airbnb rental in Bath Township, following a similar event in 2017. Chief Sinopoli discussed the town’s prohibition of short-term rentals with the property owner, noting that such rentals are a zoning violation rather than a criminal offense.
