7 Million SoCal Residents to Travel for Thanksgiving

Nearly 6.78 million Southern Californians are expected to travel for Thanksgiving, contributing to what is anticipated to be the busiest Thanksgiving travel season on record. Nationwide, approximately 82 million Americans plan to travel during the holiday period from Tuesday to Monday. According to AAA, nearly 90% of these travelers will be driving, despite high gas prices averaging $4.66 per gallon for regular unleaded across California.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) advises that the best times to drive are in the mornings to avoid heavy traffic, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, which are expected to be the most congested periods before Thanksgiving Day. Those returning home on Sunday should also anticipate significant traffic throughout the day. INRIX, a transportation data provider, suggests that travelers should be cautious of potential delays due to construction, accidents, or severe weather. Additionally, drivers are reminded to slow down and move over for emergency responders and other stopped vehicles on the roadside to ensure safety.

AAA has also identified the top holiday destinations based on booking data, with Florida leading as the most popular domestic destination due to its theme parks and cruise ports. Internationally, destinations in Europe, the Caribbean, and Australia are favored for their warm spring weather during this time of year.
