Five people, including three children, were killed in a car crash on a Colorado highway south of Denver Monday (November 24) afternoon, ABC News reports.
The collision was reported at 4:39 p.m. on Highway 83 at mile marker 40.5 near Franktown and involved three vehicles: a black Toyota hatchback, a tan Ford sedan and a black Ford pickup truck, the Colorado State Patrol confirmed in a statement.
“The Ford sedan was traveling northbound when the Toyota hit it head-on. The Toyota, after crashing into the Ford sedan, kept traveling southbound in the northbound lanes and struck a Ford pickup, causing minor damage,” the department said.
The driver of the Toyota, as well as the driver and three juvenile passengers in the Ford sedan were all pronounced dead at the scene. Two other juveniles traveling in the Ford at the time of the crash were airlifted to a nearby medical facility.
The driver of the Ford pickup truck was uninjured during the crash, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The casualties will not be publicly identified until all next of kin have been notified of their passing.
The crash is currently under investigation led by the state’s Vehicular Crimes Unit and police haven’t yet determined why the Toyota lost control. Highway 83 remained closed trhough Monday night amid the ongoing investigation and cleanup efforts.
