4-Year-Old Girl in L.A. Faces Deportation Amid Health Crisis

A four-year-old girl known as Sofia, who suffers from a severe medical condition, faces the risk of deportation from Los Angeles to Mexico, where her life-saving treatment is unavailable. Sofia was born prematurely with short bowel syndrome, a condition that prevents her body from absorbing nutrients properly. Her family, living in the U.S. legally since 2023, received a notice to self-deport, which could endanger Sofia’s life.

Sofia’s family entered the U.S. through a temporary humanitarian permission process, seeking better medical care than what was available in Mexico. According to the Los Angeles Times, her parents, Deysi Vargas and her husband, moved to Bakersfield, California, after obtaining permission to enter the U.S. legally. The family has been receiving medical treatment for Sofia at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where she requires regular care.

Dr. John Arsenault of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles stated that any interruption in Sofia’s Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) could be fatal within days. The infrastructure needed for her treatment is not available outside the U.S. NBC Los Angeles reports that Sofia’s condition requires treatment every six weeks, and deportation could jeopardize her health.

The family’s attorney, Rebecca Brown, emphasized the critical nature of Sofia’s medical needs, stating, “This child will die, and there’s no sense for that to happen.” Despite the urgency, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has declined to comment on the case. A press conference is scheduled to address the situation further.
