The earthquake was centered in Malibu at a depth of 11.6 kilometers (about 7.2 miles). The USGS said it received 44 reports of people having felt the earthquake at the time of publication Thursday morning.

The Canadian earthquake was reported days after a 2.5-magnitude earthquake was present in Kansas on August 28, according to the United States Geological Survey. The earthquake was centered in Hill City at a depth of 4.9 kilometers (about three miles).
