Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department uncovered an illegal marijuana grow operation worth over $3 million during a raid on Wednesday in Hacienda Heights. The Industry Station County Special Assignment Team executed a search warrant at the residence, revealing an unlicensed grow operation that had been bypassing its electrical panel and meter, stealing approximately $500,000 worth of electricity over several years. Southern California Edison reported that the home consumed about $18,000 in electricity monthly.
Captain Glenn Emery of the Sheriff’s Industry Station emphasized the importance of the operation, stating, “Today’s operation sends a clear message that criminal activity will not be tolerated in Los Angeles County.” He noted that the theft of electricity poses significant fire risks to nearby neighborhoods and endangers both residents and first responders. Illegal grow operations can also lead to environmental damage and attract further criminal activity, according to law enforcement.
L.A. County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis expressed gratitude to the deputies involved, particularly those from the Unincorporated Area Task Force, which she supported with $525,000 in funding for the fiscal year. Solis highlighted the coordination with Southern California Edison, which was instrumental in identifying the illegal operation due to abnormal power usage.
The home has been shut down, and an investigation is ongoing as part of a broader effort to combat illegal grows and protect public safety in unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.
