A tragic fire at the Lindenwood Apartment Complex in Long Beach, California, claimed the lives of 32 cats and one dog on Sunday. The fire was reported at 7:15 a.m. in a third-floor unit of the building located in the 3500 block of Linden Avenue, just north of East Wardlow Road. According to the Long Beach Fire Department, firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke emanating from the unit. They quickly extinguished the flames, preventing the fire from spreading to other apartments.
The unit sustained significant damage, and one resident was displaced, though no human injuries were reported. The animals were being fostered for adoption, as confirmed by LBFD Capt. Jack Crabtree. Long Beach Animal Care Services is providing support to the affected resident.
Fire investigators are working to determine the cause and origin of the fire. KTLA reported that a neighbor expressed shock over the incident, noting previous advisories against keeping animals in the complex. The incident has left the community shaken, with many residents mourning the loss of the animals.
Long Beach Post News reported that the resident was not home at the time of the fire. The city’s Department of Animal Care Services responded to offer assistance in the aftermath of the tragedy. The investigation into the fire’s cause is ongoing.
