$1M Runyon Canyon Bathroom Plan Faces Resident Backlash

A proposed $1 million restroom at Runyon Canyon has sparked controversy among local residents. The bathroom, planned for the Fuller Avenue entrance, aims to replace the current portable toilets at the popular hiking trail, which attracts around 2 million visitors annually. However, some residents question the necessity and cost of the project, citing concerns about increased crime and fire hazards near the park’s entrance.

Shira Scott Astrof, a concerned resident, expressed her worries, stating, “Aside from the epic waste of money being spent on it, I think it’ll attract more of what we don’t want.” Another resident, Scott Weil, noted a rise in crime and fires since the introduction of portable toilets, saying, “We had low crime and no fires. Since those port-o-potties, we’ve had seven fires and a heavy increase in crime.”

The nonprofit Runyon Canyon Guardians highlighted the project’s steep cost, claiming they received quotes for similar restrooms at about half the city’s budgeted amount. Some residents argue that a restroom is unnecessary for a park where hikes typically last only an hour or so.

In response to the criticism, the office of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated that the Department of Recreation and Parks has received requests for restrooms at Runyon Canyon for years. The project, not funded by the department’s General Fund, was approved after community outreach. Councilmember Nithya Raman emphasized the commitment to ensuring park safety and mentioned that the department is reviewing the appropriateness of the project.

As the review continues, the fate of the proposed restroom remains uncertain, leaving many residents feeling excluded from the decision-making process.
