Authorities in St. Kitts and Nevis are investigating the discovery of at least 19 bodies found in a drifting vessel near the coast of Nevis. The St. Kitts and Nevis Coast Guard responded to the report on Wednesday (January 29) at around 11:30 a.m. The partially submerged boat, containing decomposed human remains, was towed to St. Kitts for further investigation by police and medical officials.
Police Commissioner James Sutton stated that the vessel was a fishing boat, which is unusual for the Caribbean region. He mentioned that they believe the vessel may have originated from the West African coast and likely died long before the boat drifted into the Caribbean.
The advanced state of decomposition has made it challenging to determine the exact number of bodies and their identities. According to The St. Vincent Times, some of the bodies were too decomposed to determine their gender.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to uncover more details about the vessel’s origin and the circumstances leading to this tragic event.
