A tragic accident in Pomona has left a family mourning the loss of Angel Roman Mendoza Lopez, a 13-year-old boy who was struck and killed by a car while riding his electric scooter to a friend’s house after school on Friday. Angel sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The accident occurred on San Antonio Avenue, just north of Franklin Avenue. According to KABC, the driver involved in the collision stopped and is cooperating with Pomona police. Family members revealed that Angel was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Angel’s cousin, Karen Torres, described him as “a good kid; a golden heart,” and shared that his last call to his mother was to tell her he loved her after returning from a field trip. “He used to be in the cadets academy. His goal was to one day be a police officer, and he loved, loved soccer,” Torres said.
The speed limit in the area is 25 mph, but the exact speed of the car involved in the accident is unknown. “I don’t know how fast this car was going, but it’s just devastating to us,” Torres added.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist Angel’s family with funeral expenses.
