At least 13 people have died and dozens more were injured after an Interoceanic Train derailment in Mexico, officials confirmed via the Associated Press.
The train, which linked the states of Oaxaca and Veracruz and was along a rail line connecting the Pacific Ocean with the Gulf of Mexico, went off the rails Sunday (December 28) while passing a curve near Nizanda.
“The Secretariat of the Navy has informed me that in the Interoceanic Train accident, unfortunately 13 people died; 98 are injured, five of them seriously. The injured are in IMSS hospitals in Matías Romero and Salina Cruz, as well as in IMSS-Wellbeing hospitals in Juchitán and Ixtepec,” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced in a translated post shared on her X account. “I have given instructions for the Secretary of the Navy and the Deputy Secretary of Human Rights of the Secretariat of the Interior to travel to the site and personally attend to the families; also the delegates of IMSS and IMSS-Wellbeing.
“The Secretary of the Interior will coordinate the efforts. I appreciate the support of the Governor of Oaxaca and his team. We will continue to provide updates.”
Oaxaca state Gov. Salomon Jara confirmed that several government agencies were present at the site of the crash and providing assistance to injured victims. A total 241 passengers and nine crew members were reported to be onboard the train when the derailment took place.
The Interoceanic Train was launched by former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in 2023 as part of an effort to boost train travel in southern Mexico and develop infrastructure along the isthmus of Tehuantepec.
