An 11-year-old boy in Minden, Louisiana, has confessed to the fatal shootings of former city councilman and interim mayor, Joe Cornelius Sr., 82, and his daughter, Keisha Miles, 31. The incident occurred on Sunday (September 1) morning, with police responding to a call about two bodies in a house. Both victims were found dead from multiple gunshot wounds.
The boy, who is related to the victims, was brought to the police station by a guardian, where he confessed to the crime. Neighbors reported hearing an argument between Cornelius and the boy, possibly over credit card charges for video games. Two guns were found hidden on the property, and the shell casings at the scene matched the caliber of the two guns.
Minden Police Chief Jared McIver stated that the motive for the shootings is still unknown, and many questions remain unanswered. Police are seeking an expert who specializes in children to interview the suspect and help determine the next steps.
Joe Cornelius Sr. was a well-respected figure in the community, known for his commitment to the betterment of Minden. He was fondly referred to as “the ice cream man” by local children, as he would often distribute free frozen treats during the summer. His loss has been deeply felt by the community, with Minden Mayor Nick Cox calling for unity and support during this time of grief.
