Eleven inmates at the Orleans Parish Justice Center in New Orleans escaped on Friday (May 16), Sheriff Susan Hutson announced during a news conference, referring to it as a “very serious and unacceptable situation” via NBC News.
It wasn’t yet determined how the inmates escaped at the time of publication Friday afternoon. The inmates who breached or escaped custody should be considered armed and dangerous by the public, according to Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office Field Operations Bureau Chief Christopher Goodly via NBC News.
At least four of the escaped inmates were charged with murder, while others include aggravated assault with a firearm, armed robbery with a firearm, armed false imprisonment, battery and drug offenses. At least one escapee, identified as Kendall Myles, was apprehended in the French Quarter, according to a post shared by the Louisiana State Police Department on its X account showing him in the back of a police vehicle.
“Troop NOLA Troopers located escapee Kendall Myles in the French Quarter this morning. After a brief foot pursuit, he was apprehended on Royal Street. Troopers continue working with partners to locate the remaining escapees and ensure public safety,” the department wrote.
Local authorities immediately “launched a coordinated response” after the inmates were reported to have escaped, Sheriff Hutson confirmed.
“We’re actively working with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies in a full-scale search operation,” she said.
